Together, we’ll explore strategies to welcome, guide, and empower educators from day one.

March 26: Superintendents’ insights on supporting a new generation of teachers
The landscape of teacher preparation is evolving, including the pathways to and demographics of teachers entering schools. Join our superintendent panel to learn how we can ensure induction programs and mentoring are responsive to this new reality while leveraging the research foundation to support teacher success.

April 16: Bridging teacher residencies to classrooms through mentoring
Teacher residency programs are redefining educator preparation, and their success hinges, in large part, on mentorship that seamlessly connects classroom theory with real-world practice. What ideas and collaborative solutions can ensure the strength of mentoring in residency programs is sustained and supports seamless transitions for new teachers to thrive in classrooms?

May 8: Redefining mentoring for new staffing models
As more districts explore innovative staffing models to address teacher shortages, rethinking and adapting induction and mentoring must be part of the equation. This webinar brings together teacher workforce innovators for a candid conversation as we consider new roles for teachers and mentors in an evolving education landscape.

Grow Your Own (GYO) teacher pathways are gaining momentum as a strategy to address teacher shortages, diversify the educator workforce, and strengthen the alignment between communities and schools. However, these programs vary widely in design, quality, and outcomes — raising important questions about the pivotal role mentoring can and should play in GYO pathway programs.

June 12: What GYO candidates need from mentors
Mentoring is at the heart of successful Grow Your Own (GYO) teacher programs, shaping the experiences and outcomes of candidates while addressing workforce needs. But what do GYO candidates truly need from mentoring, and how are districts evolving their approaches and practices to meet these demands? Join us for a dynamic discussion to explore the future of mentoring in different GYO initiatives.

New Teacher Center featured in EdWeek https://newteachercenter.org/news/new-teacher-center-featured-in-edweek/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 16:48:36 +0000 https://newteachercenter.org/?p=1848

EdWeek featured our resource, High-quality mentoring and instructional coaching practices, which spells out some of the differences between effective, research-based mentoring and coaching programs and the weaker imitations that are far too common. If you are serious about retention, these differences matter.

The article focused on how great mentors and coaches need professional learning in:

  • strategies for building trusting relationships,
  • practice using entry points and language to position themselves in facilitative roles, and
  • tools to guide job-embedded conversations focused on instruction.

They also need leaders to set them up for success. EdWeek highlighted the right first steps in establishing (or reinvigorating) high-quality programs, including:

  • Pick the right people
  • Define roles and responsibilities
  • Dedicate the time

It also highlights the work of our partners in Hawai’i and Minnesota to support coaches of special education teachers.

Learn what else to prioritize to build great programs. Our resource synthesizes research and practice wisdom from our work with thousands of districts and schools, partnerships that reflect deep commitments to induction, teacher development, and student success.

A reflection for the new year from CEO Tommy Chang https://newteachercenter.org/news/a-reflection-for-the-new-year-from-ceo-tommy-chang/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 15:18:33 +0000 https://newteachercenter.org/?p=1644

The start of a new year invites reflection, recharging, and renewal.

I want to acknowledge the challenges we’ve faced over the past many months. The divisiveness in our world, catastrophic losses from natural disasters, and the weight of so many other issues have left things feeling messy, uncertain, and sometimes overwhelming. It hasn’t been easy to navigate. We collectively carry a heaviness as 2024 comes to a close.

Resilience is often the word we turn to, and for good reason. The ability to withstand hardships, gather strength, and continue forward is uniquely human. But that is not something to take on alone.

At NTC, we see one thing that carries the potential and power to enable students, teachers, and communities to not only be resilient but flourish — personal connection and relationships. That’s what I carry forward into 2025. The reminder of the profound impact personal connections have on learning and growth. This year, let’s continue to nurture the power of connection:

  • For students, it’s about cultivating a positive and welcoming atmosphere that inspires curiosity and builds confidence.
  • For educators, fostering collaboration and high-quality support fuels their passion to teach and lead.

Thank you for being part of this journey to uplift educators and empower students. I’m grateful and committed to be in this with all of you.

Here’s to a year of courage, connection, and possibility.

Tommy Chang

NTC Welcomes Education Leader Dr. Sharon Contreras to Board of Directors https://newteachercenter.org/news/ntc-welcomes-education-leader-dr-sharon-contreras-to-board-of-directors/ https://newteachercenter.org/news/ntc-welcomes-education-leader-dr-sharon-contreras-to-board-of-directors/#comments Thu, 08 Aug 2024 16:25:00 +0000 https://newteachercenter.org/?p=1 Board of Directors

NTC is pleased to announce the appointment of renowned national education leader, Dr. Sharon L. Contreras to its board of directors. She is the chief executive officer at The Innovation Project, a statewide organization dedicated to convening forward-thinking North Carolina school district superintendents to find and implement innovative and transformative practices.

The NTC eight-member board supports the organization with expertise in pedagogy, curriculum, finance, education philanthropy, academia, and district leadership. “I am excited to partner with a leader who brings a wealth of experience and a strong understanding of the needs of students,” said CEO Tommy Chang. “Dr. Contreras will help NTC to cultivate science-proven and relationship-centered working and learning conditions for teachers and students.”

Dr. Sharon Contreras has held two superintendencies – one metropolitan district and one in a county-wide district serving urban, suburban, and rural students. Sharon is celebrated for implementing policies to close achievement gaps and improve student life outcomes. While at Guilford County Schools (GCS), she helped decrease the graduation rate gap and vastly expanded career technical education and advanced placement programs, as well as access to dual enrollment programming to prepare students and their parents for the workforce. The district’s high-dosage tutoring initiative and high-school learning hubs, developed during the pandemic, are considered a national model for addressing unfinished learning. In 2022, GCS’s graduation rate increased to 91.8%, its highest ever. Contreras was named Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina PTA (2019), was among Triad Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs in 2020, and is the 2022 AASA Women in School Leadership Award recipient. She was named to the Business North Carolina Power List 2022, a collective report of the state’s most influential leaders. Sharon’s current leadership at The Innovation Project oversees a collaborative of 18 school districts across the state.

“I am thrilled to welcome Sharon to our Board of Directors,” said Board Co-Chair Shruti Sehra. “Her unique leadership skills will help NTC strengthen our financial strategies, refine our program vision and play a critical role in our strategic planning. Together with our dedicated leadership and staff, this new board member will contribute significantly to NTC’s mission of expanding our impact in supporting teachers, and create a transformative learning experience for students nationwide.”

New Teacher Center, a nonprofit leader in coaching-based professional learning for new and established educators, is pleased to announce Dr. Christy Harris has been named our new chief program officer. In her role as dean, she led program directors and faculty nationwide, ensuring that each program provided high-quality teacher and leader preparation to “develop the next generation of teachers…to be content experts with high expectations, as well as relationship builders who create positive learning environments where all kids can succeed.”

She began her career teaching English at Georgia State University, which sparked her passion for impacting students’ lives at the beginning of their learning journeys. Christy transitioned to serve as a middle school English teacher and eventually became a middle school principal, where her leadership earned her school a National Blue Ribbon Award. She furthered her impact supporting educators and students as chief academic officer of a charter school network and as a leadership consultant before returning to higher education as the founding dean of the Relay Graduate School of Education in Atlanta, Georgia.

Christy holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Georgia, a master’s degree in English from Georgia State University, a master’s degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in education in Leadership and Learning in Organizations from Vanderbilt University.

For 25 years, New Teacher Center has focused on getting better at what we do. Our reputation is built on giving educators access to career-shaping coaches and mentors — high-trust relationships that lead to high-quality learning experiences. The goal is that teachers can, in turn, model these same practices and ways of being in their classrooms with their students.

Over the last decade, to validate the effectiveness of NTC’s model and investigate the conditions needed to scale a culture of coaching school and system-wide, we have engaged in numerous studies with federal grant partners. We’ve learned a lot about what works and where to pivot. Leveraging a Decade of Research: Designing Instructional Coaching for Optimal Learning summarizes our learning journey. Authored by SRI International, the paper highlights our history and the evolution of our model and its deep alignment with research and practice wisdom on how to support optimal learning for teachers and students. Findings from these studies and our ongoing experience working with educators on the ground continue to improve our relationship-driven solutions that unlock how people engage, learn, and thrive.

The report synthesizes over ten years of research on instructional coaching, offering best practices, key findings, and innovative approaches to creating sustainable, impactful coaching models in schools across the country. Through an in-depth analysis of coaching strategies, the report highlights how intentional design and implementation can accelerate teacher development and improve outcomes for all students.

Dr. Tommy Chang, CEO of New Teacher Center, emphasized the importance of instructional coaching as a transformative tool: “This report underscores that well-designed coaching programs are a game-changer for educators and students alike. Leveraging over a decade of research, we’ve created a blueprint for schools to build coaching programs that truly elevate learning outcomes and foster teacher growth.”

Key Highlights of the Report:

  • Research-Backed Practices: Grounded in over a decade of data, the report outlines the most effective coaching methods that support instructional improvement, teacher retention, and student achievement.
  • Sustainable Systems: Offers strategies to build scalable, sustainable coaching systems that integrate seamlessly into existing school infrastructures.
  • Actionable Frameworks: Delivers practical tools and frameworks for education leaders to create or enhance coaching programs, including guidance on building a strong coaching culture, selecting qualified coaches, and assessing program impact.

With a clear roadmap for designing instructional coaching programs, the report serves as an essential resource for schools and districts committed to improving instructional leadership and teacher effectiveness. Whether looking to establish a new coaching program or refine an existing one, education leaders will find actionable guidance to create lasting, positive change.
